Skills training increases in downturn
By Paul Goatman
Employment training tends to become more popular during a recession, it has been claimed.
Graham Arnold, centre manager for Construction Training London, said that an economic downturn is a time when people typically evaluate their career.
"People want to enhance their skills. It's also a time to reflect on the career that you have been doing and sometimes people are forced into a change and that can either be a good or a bad thing," he added.
Mr Arnold went on to say that there are no great personal advantages in doing a vocational qualification over an academic degree, commenting that the option selected depends upon the individual.
Earlier this month, work-based training figures published by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, stated the government has invested £26.5 million in skills and training to help people get and keep jobs through the downturn.
Some £15 million will be invested to make skills and training available for people who have lost, or fear they may lose, their jobs.
