Smaller firms 'can lack skills training'

Small to medium-sized businesses can struggle to find information on available skills training, it has been claimed.

Will Cookson, head of skills at jobsearcher help group Working Links, commented that awareness of skills training within employers varies greatly.

"The employers that struggle more are the small to medium enterprises," he added.

"What needs to happen is that the services need to be marketed directly at those small employers."

Mr Cookson went on to stress that this is already being done to a certain extent through training providers and colleges but smaller companies also need to overcome reluctance to invest in their staff.

Earlier this month, the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills stated that people across London are benefiting from £26.5 million in government investment in skills and training to help them get and keep jobs through the downturn and £15 million to make training available for people who have lost, or fear they may lose, their jobs.
